Images and Social Media (LJ5)

 Images & Social Media

After observing the readings, I must say that they were very insightful about all of the potential things people (whether it be the consumer or the producer) might come across on a daily basis while using social media. I honestly feel like this information should be talked about on major news platforms and it should be be discussed in schools and at home most of all since young kids/ teenagers make up a large portion of the people who use social media. Images on social media are normally used for personal/ or monetary purposes. such as sending money to family, friends, colleagues, and or business partners/ customers. Most of the time many images are used for positive reasons, although there are people who use images with malicious intent. I didn't realize how prevalent fake images are until I finished reading all of the articles The Debunked on to be exact. Unfortunately there have been quite a few instantces where fake images were used to create controversy... such as "President Joe Biden Targeted by a Wave of Fake News, A Child Drowned by the Israeli Army, and A Helicopter Supplying Terrorist in Nigeria or Mali?" just to name a few. I feel like this is an issue that should be nipped in the bud because, it can be very misleading and can create an unnecesary problem that wasn't there to begin with. Unfortunately there are many (negative) effects that can transpire when it comes images in social media. It can be very detrimental to young kids and teenagers because, they might feel like the need to look, or act a certain way in order for society to accept them which isn't the case. There are a lot of psychological effects that can transpire such as: depression, anxiety, cyber bullying, inadequacy/ low self esteem and thoughts of suicide if it gets to that point. Next we will discuss the Tik Tok and Instagram controversies. Although it is unfortunate and concerning, there have been numerous cases where major platforms like Instagram and Tik Tok allegedly use the consumers information without their consent. There are also controversies about which platform would take Instagrams' place as the number one social media platform. I'm not quite sure what platform would manage to do pull that off but there are alot of platforms that can't be counted out of the equation. Platforms like Flickr and etc are on the come up and they seem to have a very promising future due to the fact that its sleek and simple to use.
